A bushfire in New South Wales has destroyed the homes of several families and an entire small business overnight.
Three bushfires raged toward homes in Kurri Kurri and Abermain near Cessnock. They eventually joined to create one large blaze, which destroyed six to 10 properties.
Carolyn Taylor’s father, who was sleeping on the property of her sister in Abermain at the time an ember attacked him and started a fire.
Just hours earlier, firefighters had saved the home from bushfire.
Simone Taylor, Taylor’s younger sister, noticed the smoke rising from the roof as she walked through the property after the first fire.
Craig and Sherry worked hard to remove their children and their father from their eight-year old home.
Taylor explained that they had screamed and shouted at my father’s apartment because he is deaf. But, they managed to get him out.
The only thing we could do was sit and watch the fire.
We’ve been trying to calm the children down, but they are all in a very upset state.
Phoebe, the family’s pet lizard was saved. They lost many of their possessions including those belonging to their mother who died, as well as new appliances, Christmas gifts, and even some of their own items.
Teasdale Tyres, owned by Bryan Teasdale, lost its business when the fire ravaged through their shop in Weston.
He said, “It was like a lightning bolt, it hit in seconds. The wind changed and bang, there was the injury.”
By the time I turned to look, it had already returned.
The flames reached the skies and were banging.
It’s been 14 years since we started from scratch (but we will get up again… we’ll build, mate).
Darrell from the locality, who was left behind to protect his property, claimed he’d “never witnessed anything like” it.
He told 9News, “I have lived in this area all my life. This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.”
It’s really sad.
I’ve been washing my house, what can you do? You can’t really do anything else.”
