Salt Lake Film Society reports that Salt Lake City’s beloved Tower Theatre, which is 95 years old and located in the 9th and 10th neighborhoods of Salt Lake City, will close its doors for the rest of 2023.

Tower Theatre released a brand new initiative on Thursday entitled “Tower Theatre, the Next 100 Years.”

SLFS is a nonprofit organization that specializes in arts. According to SLFS’s website, the theatre will be renovated and repaired to become a place for “unique technology film screenings”, DVDs, “museum-like displays” and cultural cinematic experiences.

In December of last year, with the help of a grant provided by the Alternative Visions Fund, the Film Society purchased the Tower Theatre Building from its long-time owner.

On the SLFS’ website, it was written: “This purchase gives Tower a new start.” In order to make serious, long-term improvements we will no longer be focusing on the cosmetic changes that were previously announced.

Salt Lake Film Society operates the theatre, which was originally built in 1928. The six-screen Broadway Centre Cinemas were taken over by SLFS in 2002. Tower and Broadway were both shut down in March 2020 because of the COVID-19 epidemic. Broadway opened in October 20, but Tower reopened later due to supply-chain problems.

Update from the Film Society states that plans for the Tower require support and fundraising, so it won’t be reopened until 2023. According to the update, “stakeholders” and local businessmen will be invited to form an advisory group that will help plan the future for the theatre.

SLFS announced that the project would be a “community-based initiative” and they will provide updates to their website and on social media.

In the course of current repairs to the Tower, its marquee is being retrofitted. Rain gutters are also going to be installed. Roof issues will be fixed. Interior sealing problems will be resolved. And the lobby, as well as the ADA-accessible restrooms and a brand new lobby, will all be demolished. It was a well-known fact that the Tower’s bathrooms used to be small, located in its basement.

Salt Lake Film Society’s premiere film venue will be the Tower. It will host Q&A sessions with directors and actors, environmental and cultural films, panel discussion, archival movie access and a variety of SLFS programs that encourage appreciation for motion picture art.
