The traffic was diverted to Swede Rd. north of Merrill due to a fire that occurred in the town on Monday night. Swede Rd. was used to divert traffic northbound on Hwy. The highway was closed for over five hours, and Lone Pine Dr. until just before 2 am Tuesday morning.
The Lincoln County 911 Center sent the Merrill Fire Department to N2532 Highway. The Town of Merrill received a call at 8:30 pm on November 27, 2023 about a reported fire in a detached garage. MFD Engine 65, Tender 65, and Medic 61 responded to the fire and found “smoke rising from the garage roof near the wood-burning fireplace” as well as the owner spraying water on the area.
MFD firefighters “started extinguishing fire using a 1-1/2″ hoseline”, and “used a pole to lift the ceiling” in order to find smoldering roof joists and smoldering roofing insulation. The release stated that “Firemen applied water while also exposing more ceiling” to extinguish the fire.
MFD used thermal imaging cameras throughout the home to identify that the fire was “confined to the area around the chimney in the garage”
According to MFD, “Fire units were at the scene for almost two hours. They used about 900 gallons water.” After that it was confirmed the fire had completely been extinguished.
No injuries have been reported despite the fact that three people were in the house at the time the fire broke out.
According to the press release, the attached garage suffered moderate water and fire damage around a woodstove. However, there was no damage to the house’s living space.
