A fire ravaged through a home early this morning, forcing firefighters to rescue a woman.
The bungalow in Carlton Colville was found on fire by a cyclist who saw it on his early morning ride and called emergency services.
Five fire engines were present from all over the area. The firefighters saved the woman from behind her house.
By 6.52am, the fire had been put out.
Mel Buck, incident commander of the fire at the scene said that a passerby had seen flames on the roof. He called the Fire Service.
The fire department rescued a person at the rear of the home after arriving on the scene.
The bungalow’s front has suffered extensive damage from fire, water and smoke.
We are now working with the investigator of the fire to determine the cause.
A 74-year old neighbour said that residents of the street were “so relieved”, as the woman occupant was alive, and the fire did not spread.
He stated: “I believe I speak for everyone on this street. We are all relieved to know that no one was injured, and my neighbor was lucky enough to survive.
I heard some noises and went to investigate. The noise was harrowing. Massive plumes of smoke were visible.
The fire department saved the life of our neighbor and stopped the spread of the fire.
After yesterday’s heavy rainfall, it is the last thing that a woman who has lived in Hall Road for over 20 years expects to see this morning.
She stated: “Unlike her late husband who would always be up before dawn breaks, I prefer to get out the bed by 9.”
It was devastating to wake up and see that my neighbour’s home was on fire. This was not what I had expected after yesterday’s heavy rain.
