When Trey and Abby Brothers saw the crumbling brick manor, in North Carolina, despite it being abandoned and rundown, they immediately knew that this was going to be their home.
Abby and Trey transformed their old house into a modern, incredible home, adding $745,000.
After spotting the property online, they bought it for 155,000 dollars in June 2018.
The mansion was completely renovated in nine months and the couple moved into the house just before their baby’s birth in December 2020.
They knew that it would be a difficult task to restore the mansion built in 1913.
Abby, an RN, said to NeedToKnow.co.uk that when she saw the house in person, it appeared sad and dilapidated.
She admitted that many people thought we were nuts for purchasing a house of this size and with so much needing to be done.
Aberdeen, North Carolina is home to the 6,000 square-foot house. This colonial brick manor has six bedrooms and four bathrooms. It also boasts a foyer, dining room, study, living room and large attic.
The Brothers were determined to maintain the original design of the house, which was built originally for a large family.
Abby explained, ‘We were determined to turn our house into a real home.
The task was huge, as everything needed to be upgraded. Plumbing, electrical, walls, and windows were all original 1913.
There was no central cooling, which would have been crucial in the North Carolina heat. Abby explained that there was radiator heating, but this made it difficult to heat up the house. The radiators were removed and replaced.
After years of neglect, the house was in a bad state. Some rooms were completely useless.
The mom of two recalled that the house had several leaks on the roof which caused serious damage to the home, with the most severe being the water in the dining area.
She added, ‘This entire side of the house required new flooring, floor joists, and roof repairs and replacement.
The couple completed as many of the renovations as they could with the help of their family members and friends.
She said, ‘We were involved in all projects, whether it was in a small way or a large one.
She continued, “Trey finished the floors of the bathroom and the kitchen/pantry with terrazzo.
Trey’s mom and stepdad installed all the tiles except for one in the bathroom. The tile was laid by my family, and it’s enough for me. We did all the painting of the interior ourselves.
The property is now valued at $900,000.
The home is a ‘warm, cozy and comfortable’ place for the family. However, there are still some things to be done.
Our home is priceless. Abby exclaimed, ‘We loved our house when it fell apart. But that love has only grown.
The mom proudly said, ‘We live here and we can see the flaws. But when we look at how far we have come in our home, it is easy to overlook them.
Four large and two smaller trees were used to decorate the vast space.
The mom told me that she had installed lights on the stairs, around the porch and in the window.
“When the holiday season is over, there will be more work, but right now we are just having fun as a whole family.”
