The rooms were turned upside-down, and trees and roofs fell. In the Mexican port city of Acapulco in Guerrero, Hurricane Otis left behind ruins, including the house of Johnny Weissmuller. He was the best-known Tarzan actor.

Weissmuller fell in love with Acapulco in 1948 when he recorded Tarzan and the Mermaids, the final film in which the King of the Jungle starred. In the film, the main character jumps into the ocean from the famed Quebrada. This is a risky and traditional maneuver performed by intrepid tourists.

According to Acapulco Virtual Museum, Weissmuller grew more enthusiastic about the spa when John Wayne, a famous actor himself proposed buying the Los Flamingos Hotel. The place soon became a Hollywood retreat in the Mexican Pacific.

Travesias notes that Elizabeth Taylor, Lana Turner and Orson Weissmuller joined Wayne and Weissmuller to organize memorable parties, until the dawn. They did this while hiding from paparazzi.

The virtual publication adds, “The noise from the endless parties became too loud for Johnny. He then built a separate house away from the others,” referring to the atmosphere in the hotel’s round house that was severely damaged by Hurricane Irma. Weissmuller was killed there and his remains are buried in Acapulco’s Valle de la Luz Cemetery.

The house in Porto has long been a popular tourist destination. It was a particularly prosperous time in this port in the 50s and 60s when international celebrities crowded into its luxury hotels.

The mansion’s stately aura was ruined by the fury and destruction of Otis which hit Acapulco on Wednesday October 25 as a high-danger hurricane, resulting in 46 deaths and 58 people missing.

On that day, “the nightstand and receptionist were both there.” “They were very upset, thinking it would be pure water. But it turned out to be a strong gust of wind,” said Victor Manuel Hernandez.

They had to keep the door closed because everything was destroyed. He destroyed rooms and trees from inside. Hernandez says, “The pool that we were renovating is gone.”

The old, but beautiful, hallways of Weissmuller’s former mansion, which has a Hollywood Walk of Fame star, are engulfed in debris and plants.

A china sign which reads “Casa Tarzan”, still hangs in Acapulco. You can see the poster for Tarzan and The Amazons. This is one of several films in this series, starring an artist with German roots, and which was filmed between the 1930s to the 1940s.

In this 780,000-person city that relies on tourism, the cyclone also affected another 274,000 houses and 600 hotels. The round house, which is what we call ‘Tarzan’s House’ was destroyed, says Hernandez.

The breathtaking panoramic views of the hotel from its highest point on the cliff have been destroyed by destruction to the infrastructure and mansions in the area.

Acapulco’s set was not just for Hollywood celebrities. John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy spent their honeymoon in Acapulco. Scenes from an Elvis Presley film were also filmed there, despite the fact that “The King” never visited the port.

The sunsets at its bay’s main beach are also emblematic. Agustin Lara, a Mexican poet and musician who wrote love songs for Maria Felix the Mexican movie diva was inspired by the beaches.

The city has also seen a decline, as the expansion of slums in the area around the tourist centre and the rise of the drug cartels that want to control the Port have all contributed. As mobility and communication continue to crumble, only ten out of the almost forty workers in Los Flamingos have returned so far.
