The largest school district in the country is preparing for the new school year 2023-24.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams, NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban, and NYC Department of Education Chancellor David C. Banks met on Friday to discuss back-to school safety in the city ahead of 2023’s start of the new school year.
New York City Schools Chancellor David Banks said that the front doors of public schools in New York City will be locked starting this year. This is a major increase in security to help prevent possible shootings at schools.
The school security agent will see anyone at the entrance to the building who presses the buzzer after the doors lock. Banks explained that they will have the opportunity to speak with them, and show their ID as well as explain why they are there.
Next year, the program will be expanded to include middle and high school students.
There will be programs in place to help students feel more secure just outside of schools where most crimes against students take place.
The increase in guns confiscated in schools in the past year is attributed to violent incidents that occurred just outside of school grounds.
Last year 6,945 guns, box cutters and knives were confiscated on the school grounds.
Banks stated that the city would continue to work closely with local residents to develop safe routes to and from schools.
Banks said that they were concerned about the increase in weapons being brought into school last year. Banks said that the kids did not bring these weapons to class to harm their peers. “They told us repeatedly that these weapons were used for protection on their way to school and back.”
Banks added that students would also be taught how to resolve conflicts without violence by spending two to four minute each day focusing on their breathing.
He said, “It is not a simple thing that you can do.” It is an important life-long skill, and we hope to improve it in our schools over time. This will help students to know what to do when faced with trauma.
NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban stated that the beginning of the new school year coincides the most safe summer for years.
Shooting incidents in five boroughs are down by 26%. Caban said that the result was 193 less people who were shot this summer. Caban said that murders had also decreased. We have had 27 less murders in the city this year.
New York City’s public schools will begin classes on Thursday, September 7, 2018.
