North Lauderdale is about to receive some assistance with their renovations for the new hurricane season.
The City Manager Michael Sargis, announced on Thursday that they would be launching an innovative, first-of-its kind program to provide homeowners with up to $30,000. This money can go towards roof replacements or reroofings, installation of secondary water barriers, installation of storm straps and/or hurricane resistant windows and doors.
According to the website of the city, a secondary water barrier can be defined as a “water-resistant roof underlayment or product” that protects the structure it’s attached to in case the roof is damaged or removed by hurricane force winds, or if the rain is driven into the roof from the wind.
Sargis says that the grants are not repaid. The excess funds from the American Rescue Plan, or COVID-19, will be used to fund the Home Mitigation program.
North Lauderdale homeowners and residents are required to qualify. Applicants must also be up-to-date on property taxes, and have no code violations.
Sargis said to CBS News MIami’s Peter D’Oench, “If people are going to get a mortgage then they need insurance.” Over 500 people expressed interest. My evaluators, after people have applied, will visit the condos or homes to make sure they are in need of what the people see. Then contractors will inspect the houses and provide quotes. It is 60 days, but also “first come first served.”
Sargis stated “It’s a wonderful opportunity for the residents.” North Lauderdale, a community of working-class residents, is an excellent opportunity to receive help that they might otherwise not have been able to obtain.
