Many people in the United States have been left with harrowing situations due to floods caused by torrential rains.
Floods in Lagos, Delta, and Anambra among other states have displaced many people from their homes and stolen their belongings. This has led to deaths and postponed the palliative work scheduled to start on the Third Mainland Bridge.
Tragic
Yesterday, heavy flooding in Lagos washed away a motorcycle commercial at Papa Ashafa area Orile Agege of Lagos State.
Ibrahim Farinlonye confirmed the incident as the Zonal Coordinator for South West of the National Emergency Management Agency. He said, “One motorcyclist simply named Mr. Abe swept off after refusing heed warnings by his colleagues to not ride along Ile Epo Busstop Canals in Alimoso Local Government Area, Lagos State.”
Postponement
The Lagos State Government also announced the indefinite delay of palliative work scheduled to start on today’s failed sections of Third Mainland Bridge.
It was reported that the postponement became necessary because of yesterday’s downpour in the entire metropolis.
In a press release, Lagos State Transportation Commissioner, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi explained how the rain had affected preliminary work on the asphalt paving of the bridge, which was being done by the Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LPWC).
The statement stated that “a later date will be communicated, subject to the weather conditions.”
Sack
Residents of the Ndokwa East Local Government Area in Delta State were displaced from their homes by floods. The floods, according to reports, occurred after the River Niger overflowed the banks for days.
The worst affected area is Aika Ezeolu, where the water level is reported to be at the same as the River Niger.
According to sources, most residents of the area have relocated higher ground while some haven’t.
Felix Edemanya, the Secretary of Ndokwa East Local Government Area said yesterday: “We’ve already warned and encouraged the residents to take preventative measures to avoid being cut off by floods.
They should move and protect their belongings. They should leave the area immediately because they will be worried about losing anyone as a consequence of their negligence.
Floods also forced scores of Polobubo/Tsekelewu residents to leave their homes in Warri North.
Paul Toruwei, the President of Polobubo Blocks, told the Sunday Vanguard the situation is bad and that victims are forced to rely on canoes in order to move around the community.
Protest
In Anambra State students at the Metallurgical Training Institute in Onitsha, protested against disruptions of educational activities by flooding.
Students who demonstrated in large numbers last Thursday said that floods have paralysed both academic and nonacademic activity.
Chigozie Oyenyili (President of Student Union Government) expressed his dissatisfaction with the situation facing students. He told journalists that the flooding of hostels had forced them to remain awake at night and destroyed their possessions.
He stated: “Flooding was a problem in the school. It got worse because the government began a flood control program by removing unused drainage in the building. However, they did not put in place the measures necessary to reduce flooding.
The entire institution has been flooded as I speak.
Students property is being destroyed. Our beds, mattresses and learning materials have all been washed out. Laptops, soup pots, even laptops themselves, are also gone.
The Public Relations Officer for the Institution, Mr. OwohUgochukwu blamed the Anambra State Government when contacted.
The flood problem has been lingering for years, he said. “But the school authorities do their best.” It is because the government of Owerri channeled water from Obosi and Nkpor to the school.
The state government excavated an existing drainage system in order to expand it, but has since abandoned the project.
