In a fire that ravaged a nine-story apartment building, four children were killed. Dozens of others were injured.

The fire that destroyed a nine floor apartment block in the capital of Vietnam has killed 56 and injured dozens.

According to the Vietnam News Agency, the fire started at midnight local time (7:00 GMT Tuesday) and was contained by 2 a.m. (2 am GMT Tuesday).

Hanoi Police Department said that “56 people were killed and 37 injured” in a press release.

State media reported that 150 people lived in the building. The residents were treated for injuries and smoke inhalation as they fled the building.

The state-owned VTV national broadcaster reported that four of the victims were children.

Night-time television images show firefighters with ladders and hoses on the scene, while during the day, a thick column of dark, dense smoke is seen rising from the building.

The AFP reported that the small balconies of the apartment building were surrounded with iron. There was only one exit and there was no ladder for an emergency on the exterior.

I heard many cries for help. A woman living near the building told AFP that she could do little to help. The apartment has no exit, so it is impossible for victims to escape.

A witness reported that a child of a certain age was thrown out of a window to escape from the fire.

When I was just about to go to bed, I smelt something. “I went out and saw the flames,” she told me.

The smoke was all over the place. She said that a child was thrown off a floor. “I don’t even know if he made it or not, although people caught him with a mattress.”

The Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh ordered an investigation after visiting the scene and the hospital to see the survivors.

In recent years, there have been several fatal fires that occurred in Vietnam. These often happened at popular entertainment venues such as karaoke clubs.

In Ho Chi Minh City, the commercial center of Vietnam, 32 people were killed by a fire in a three storey karaoke club. In addition to 32 deaths, 17 other people were injured by the fire. The owner was arrested for violating regulations on fire safety.

After the tragic event, Prime Minister ordered an inspection at all venues with high risk.

In 2018, 13 people were killed in a fire that broke out in an apartment building in Ho Chi Minh City.

In 2016, 13 more people died after a fire in Hanoi at a Hanoi karaoke bar.
