The current Drumheller Curling Rink has many issues.

Sadly, this facility suffered another major blow during the off-season. Debbie Walker, President of Drumheller Curling Club said that the facility had suffered from more leakage. The roof of the building leaked in early October when we started to install the ice. We had to stop the installation. Although the leak was fixed on the outside of the building, damage was done on the top floor, in front of bar area. Mold was found on the fallen ceiling. For safety, the town completed an assessment of air quality and closed off this area. This air quality assessment is significant and would require extensive repairs. The bar/concession area is our main source of income, so we cannot operate the season without it. Walker says that they wouldn’t be able use this part of the curling track for months, which would drastically shorten their entire season.

Both the Curling Club of Drumheller and the Town of Drumheller believe that the new setback may have been the final straw for the structure. Darryl Drohomerski, CAO of the Town Drumheller says “It is time to cut losses.” We always planned that, after this lease ended, the facility would either require high six-figure dollars in repairs or demolition. It has been clear for years that the facility will be demolished, in the hope of building a new arena to the north. Both the Drumheller Curling Club and Town of Drumheller hope to raise money for a new facility. The Curling Club also continues to seek funding from the Provincial and Federal Governments.

Walker says that they’re working with Carbon in order to determine if local curlers will be able curl this season. We are working closely with Carbon Ag Society in order to find a solution for those who want to play curling this season. The club’s executive is working hard to find a place for curling to be played in the valley. We need to continue getting the support from our community, the town council and members.
