Lorraine Clark, a mother of a young son, was thrilled when told that she and her child had found a home in Kildrum. However, after removing the wallpaper, she noticed damage.
After the Cumbernauld community came together to assist a Cumbernauld mother with her home damage, her faith in humanity was restored.
Lorraine Clark, who had spent just three months in the North Lanarkshire Council housing list, was thrilled to hear that she’d been offered a home. The 50-year old decided to renovate the Kildrum house after receiving its keys.
What she found behind the wallpaper, however, left her mum in a state of shock. Lorraine found cracked walls, wet patches and PVC falling from the window. After a social media post, many people offered materials, work and items to help the 50-year old. Lorraine was ‘blown away.’
Glasgow Live quoted the mother as saying: “I feel like I’m not alone. The community has embraced me.” Carpet and Floor Store is providing free carpet in one room. I chose the son’s. I’ve been contacted by a plasterer named David Hutt who will give me one full day free of services and material. But I need to strip the walls for his arrival.
People have given me free paint. I’m going today to the house of a man for a rug. The Carbrain Community Hub has asked me to measure the windows of my home for second hand curtains.
No, my existing blinds/blinds etc. do not fit the new windows. Two packs of underlay and flooring were offered. The generosity and kindness of the people has left me speechless.
When Lorraine first discovered the problem, she was shocked. The Sanctuary Housing Association told her that the repairs wouldn’t be done until next year.
She told me: “I was hoping my luck would change because it took only three months for someone to tell me I could move into a new place.
A friend helped me remove the wallpaper. The walls were disgusting, so I immediately contacted the housing association.
They replied to me within an hour, and told me that they could not carry out the repairs before January 3, 2024. They said they couldn’t fix it for Christmas, for my 12-year-old son.
The plaster looks as if it was slapped onto the window. It appears that there’s a wet patch in the room, but it’s not damp. In my son’s bedroom, there’s a crack running from the corner to the opposite wall. I was distraught.
When I saw this, I was so angry that I started to cry. It was disappointing because I had thought that I would be important for once. We felt as if we were not important. For a couple of days, I felt like I had lost all hope.
It really affected my anxiety. It was signed before I saw all that. “I felt like I was going into a shell.”
After an inspection, Sanctuary Scotland confirmed that they had repaired the damage to the property.
The spokesperson stated: “Miss Clarke has moved into the property since late September. She contacted us to voice her concerns last week, 10 October.”
We are dedicated to providing support to all of our residents. Following an inspection on Miss Clarke’s property, which took place Monday 16th October, we confirm today (17th October) that the work was finished to install PVC plates around the window frames and to replaster damaged walls.
