Today, the Land Conservation and Development Committee held a luncheon and toured burn scars left by the Almeda Fire.
Leaders in the community spoke to the LCDC about land recovery and the importance of land usage.
Tour participants saw improvements to Highway 99, toured a rebuilt Harley Davidson motorcycle and viewed multiple housing construction sites.
Stuart Warren, LCDC’s southern Oregon representative, said that the fire had been destructive, but also provided cities with an opportunity to think about and reimagine how their community can look, feel, or function.
Families are already moving into the nearly finished Renaissance Flats Project, which is aimed at Latino families from the local community.
Talent Mobile Estates was destroyed in the fire. The vacant plot that is currently on the land will be transformed into a model home neighborhood.
Joseph Slaughter said that a lot of what the Almeda Fire destroyed was housing for the valley’s most vulnerable residents. It was some of the most affordable and natural housing.
LCDC stated that the LCDC will determine whether or not building codes need to be revised based on progress. Changes to building codes could help Oregon build homes more quickly and affordably following disasters such as wildfires.
We need to build more homes in all price ranges. Slaughter explained that if housing can be built more quickly, this will help with some of the problem.
Warren stated, “It gave me and my commissioners a chance to see how Phoenix Town and Jackson County had been able redevelop themselves after the fire.” “I believe these communities are rebuilding more effectively.”
Warren witnessed the devastation of the Almeda Fire, and is now playing a part in the rebuilding of the community.
Warren’s biggest takeaway from his tour is that the communities are “doing an incredible job” in trying to steer the development to a better place than before.
