The start date of the in-person education for Mukilteo’s Endeavour Elementary school has been delayed.
The amount of work needed after an early morning fire on December 4, well before staff and students had arrived for school, is the reason.
Even though the fire didn’t destroy the school it caused enough damage to require the district to switch to a remote-learning program. Originally, the plan was to return to the school after the winter break, on January 2, but the current best case scenario has been pushed back to Jan. 8 and that is still not definite.
In a letter to parents, the Mukilteo District School said that they are working closely with several agencies and companies, such as the Fire Department, in order to continue the work on the school until the holiday break.
In a note sent to parents on Wednesday after a tour, district officials stated that the main building, including all classrooms, had suffered smoke and water damages.
The fire marshal has not yet made a decision on the cause.
According to the district, restoration experts have hired crews from as many as 21 states. According to the numbers provided by the district, 70-100 people per day have been working on the project at the school, and six large industrial dumpsters are being filled. The school is also cleaning up everything that’s salvageable.

In the 72-hour period following the incident, the crews thoroughly cleaned all laptops and tested them to allow students and educators to resume remote learning.
After cleaning, the reconstruction process will commence. This work includes repairs to the roof, walls, and paint throughout the entire school. It also involves the replacement of flooring and damaged cabinets or shelving, as well as cleaning.
The list also included work to be done on systems critical such as the electrical system, network wiring, ventilation, and fire alarm system.
The district now plans to return students to classroom learning earlier than initially thought, on January 8. The district will return students to in-person learning after winter break on Jan. 2.
