Mumbai’s poor, leaky infrastructure has been exposed by the recent rains. This is causing commuters inconvenience. Mumbaikars describe Ghatkopar station as a “deathtrap”.
Ghatkopar is undergoing an upgrade, and there are heaps of debris on the platforms. They are unlevel, so they have now become the home for potholes. The station does not have proper roofing to protect travelers from heavy rains. Commuters complained about the lack of shade in some areas and partially chipped roof sheets that leak.
Ashok Aheaya is a commuter who said: “Work will continue as usual with minimum disruption. However, the current conditions are dangerous for the monsoon.

Potholes and iron plates are present on the platform at Ghatkopar, which pose a threat to commuters. It’s a mess at the exit, too. Stones are scattered everywhere. Rahul Pawar told reporters that there hasn’t been any improvement in this situation in the last six months.
Jainam Shah, a commuter Jainam says that railways have turned this station into Hell. “The Ghatkopar railway station is a deadly trap!” The roofs of the station and any other openings are prone to leakage when it rains. We will have a miserable life if there is heavy rain.
Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation will upgrade the station’s elevated deck while Central Railways (CR) digs foundations for Roof Repairing.
The debris is all over the place
Ghatkopar’s not the only station that has debris left over from upgrade works. Some stations have barricades on platforms that leave little or no space to allow commuters to move safely.
The same scene was seen in Thane Mulund Byculla. Nandita Jani, another commuter, said: “Quick removal of the debris in the work area should be one of our criteria.”
Dombivli train station has no shelter
Trains now stop on the far end of the station platform without a cover. This is because the railways have switched coach numbers. Vruddhi Patel, a commuter at Dombivli railway station said that the monsoon was here but there wasn’t a roof.
Station platform height is also a problem. The majority of platforms at the station are not user-friendly. Ravikant Sinha is another commuter who believes that authorities should’ve checked the platforms first before changing them.
An official from the railway promised to repair all of the problems. The official said that “we are working on it and will complete all work in due time”.
Shivraj Manaspure said that roofs in Ghatkopar, Dombivli and other stations were compliant and are being improved temporarily.
