The retirement home of an Alberta couple in the south was almost destroyed by vandals.

Dean and Lorrenda Southern prepared to move from Brooks, Alberta to a small piece of land east of Drumheller by the end of June.

The house was lifted on the moving framework by the end of the month and ready to be transported.

The couple also celebrated their wedding anniversary on that same weekend. So they went to Saskatchewan, Canada for a romantic retreat.

On their way back home, a friend calls them.

Your house’s windows have been damaged. While we drove, I thought it would be simple to fix. We got another phone call from Dean, who said that there was a large amount of debris outside the house. Dean replied, “Well, I think that is not an easy fix.”

Dean, I’m sorry to say that your entire house was destroyed. My friend said this when he came over. “I was overwhelmed with grief.”

Each wall is punctured.

Some people appear to be so badly kicked that their foot has penetrated into the room.

Bathrooms are in a bad state.

Toilets and sinks have been shattered.

The doors of washing machines and dryers were twisted.

Interior doors are completely detached from their hinges.

The vandals smashed the air conditioner and two furnaces in this split-level house.

Dean, despite his pastor’s inability understand why Lorrenda and he are being targeted, says that the destruction is personal.

The more I consider it, the more personal it seems. Somebody urinated in my bath. This is very personal to me. Dean explained that it was a way to make a point.

This is a terrible thing for anyone to experience. It is even more awful when it happens to you.

Lorrenda is a professional counselor. She said, “Reliving the day after hearing it was one of most painful things.”

It’s something I have never had to deal with. I’ve dealt with other people’s panic attacks, but not mine. I had to get out of the car and take a stroll to breathe.

Their problems are compounded by the fact that they do not have insurance.

Once the couple had placed the home on a mover’s frame, their insurance policy was cancelled.

The mover’s policy kicks in at this stage.

Dean said that he heard this news while driving to his home. He then called the mover of our house and told him, “Boy, are we going to really need insurance, because it looks like there has been some vandalism in this house,” he explained.

Dean, you only have structural insurance. The vandalism coverage is not included. I was shocked to find that I did not have any protection. I had no protection.”

The Southerns were also arranging a small mortgage to renovate their home. However, on Monday the bank informed them that due to the extent of the damage, the house was no longer eligible.

The home has a damage estimate of $150,000.

The Southerners have had to turn online for reconstruction money despite the fact that they received help from tradespeople, church members and others.

A GoFundMe fundraising campaign was launched to raise money for repairs.

According to the RCMP no suspects has been identified.

CTV News Calgary spokesperson said that the house had been so badly damaged, forensic services could not attend.

Anyone with any information regarding the Brooks RCMP or Crime Stoppers is asked to contact them.
