Two days after the fire, ashes were spread across the street and piles of partially burnt clothes were found in the driveway.

After a house in San Diego’s University City neighbourhood caught fire last Friday, a family of five now has no home to go back to just ten days before Christmas.

A house fire broke out Friday afternoon in University City.

Around 3:30 pm, the fire broke out on Bloch Street to the northeast of Interstate 5/State Route 52. SDFD reported that smoke was pouring out of the house when firefighters arrived.

SkyRanger 7 flew above the house and observed firefighters spraying water onto the flames from the rooftop through the large holes on the two-story roof.

SDFD reported that two homes in close proximity were at risk of catching on fire. However, they were saved in the end. SDFD reported that it took around 30 minutes for crews to put out the fire.

SDFD reports that the Red Cross is providing assistance to five adult residents. There were no injuries reported.

SDFD did not determine the cause of fire.

The fire caused $750,000 worth of damage to the home and another $250,000 for the contents. This totals to nearly $1 million.

Adonis Albaright, NBC 7 reporter, spoke to neighbors living next door.

“I went shopping with friends when I got a phone call from my mother asking, “Is there anything you would like me to get from your house?” “The neighbor’s home is on fire…and it appears that our house will be consumed by the flames,” said neighbor Olivia.

Olivia’s house was saved thanks to her father and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Crews. They were comprised of over 60 firefighters.

Olivia said, “I was in the car driving with my friend when I thought my house was about to catch fire. I didn’t even know whether my neighbor’s dogs were okay.

On Sunday, there were still ashes scattered on the sidewalk as well as piles of partially charred clothes in the driveway.

Olivia: “They have lost all their belongings – their wallets and passports as well as their keys.”

Olivia says the community is rallying to help her family in any way they can.

She says that while it is tragic, the situation could have been worse.
