Residents in Chennai have reported that they were without power for 24 hours due to the rain.
Chennai, its suburbs, and the surrounding area were inundated on Monday as heavy rain and strong winds continued. Cyclone Michaung is due to land within the next 24-hours. Schools and offices closed, flights were stopped, and people had to be evacuated from the flooded areas.
According to India Meteorological Department, Cyclone Michaung will land along the coasts of Andhra Pradesh by Tuesday.
Social media users shared images of cars floating in the parking lots in residential areas due to flooding. According to reports, Five Furlong Road connecting Guindy with Velachery collapsed and the roof on a nearby petrol station was damaged by the constant rain.
The power was also cut off by the rain, and many residents reported that they had been without electricity in the last 24 hours.
As a result of the cyclone, several flights leaving and arriving in Chennai were delayed. According to officials, airport operations for arriving passengers have been suspended until 11pm.
The Tamil Nadu Government has also declared public holidays in the districts of Chennai (Chengalpattu), Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram.
Shiv Dasmeena, Chief Secretary, issued an Order on Sunday, under the Negotiable Act of 1881. He stated that the four districts would likely receive strong winds and heavy rains on Monday, due to cyclonic storm.
“All government offices including the offices of public undertakings/corporation boards, banks of financial institutions, etc, in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu districts will be closed on Monday,” the order read.
Private companies are required by the government to offer their staff the option to work from home and to only send those employees to office who need to be there.
According to the order, all essential services including hotels, restaurants and other businesses involved in relief, rescue and disaster response will continue as normal.
K N Nehru, Minister of Municipal Administration in Tamil Nadu visited the Integrated Command and Control Centre at Ripon building to assess the rescue and relief measures currently underway.
State government has also appointed 17 IAS officers for flood prevention and rescue work in the corporations of Tambaram and Avadi, Chennai and Tambaram.
