Officials and media reported that the storm, which ripped through southern Russia and Ukraine over the weekend, knocked down trees and powerlines, and inundated coastal areas. More than half a million people were left without electricity on Monday.
Tass, an international news agency, reported that the snowfall in Moscow was three times more than usual, with drifts of up to 25 cm (almost ten inches).
These storms formed part of the weather system which created conditions similar to a blizzard in Romania, Moldova Bulgaria and Serbia, on Sunday. The system dumped snow, caused power failures and traffic fatalities.

Odesa officials, who are from one of the worst-hit regions, reported that more than 1900 people including 138 kids had to be saved after drifting and blowing snow trapped them inside their vehicles. The officials warned the public to stay away from travel.
The winds in Kyiv damaged the largest Ukrainian flag, measuring 16 by 34 meters (53 by 111 feet), which was placed centrally within the capital.
The state-run news agency reported that the storm in southern Russia caused waves to flood into Sochi’s beach resort, ripped the roof of a five story building in Anapa, and damaged schools and homes in Kuban. The storm also caused an cargo ship near Anapa to run aground.
Caspian Pipeline Consortium stopped crude oil loading in the port of Novorossiysk, as the region was buffeted by winds up to 86 km/hr (54mph) and up to 8 m (26ft) of waves.
Regional Gov. of Moscow Andrei Vorobyov stated that around 3,000 people cleared the roads after heavy snowfall.
The snowstorm in Serbia left many villages without electricity. RTS reported that a 53-year old man reported missing in central Serbia on Sunday and continues to be searched for.
The storm in Bulgaria brought up to 40 cm (almost 16.5″) of snow, downed electricity lines and forced the closure of schools. Over 1,000 people were rescued from vehicles.
