Insurance industry organizations and government authorities work together
The Port of Montreal authorities have intercepted over 70 vehicles that were stolen and declared for export.
The Canada Border Services Agency said in a press release that it had worked closely with Service de police de la Ville de Montreal, Montreal Port Authority and Equite Association during the operation on November 13.
CBSA estimates that the vehicles intercepted recently in Montreal are worth over $5 million. 54 of them originate from Ontario, and 18 from Quebec.
The CBSA added that all 72 vehicles had been turned over to SPVM, for investigation and further legal action.
CBSA intercepted 1,038 stolen cars destined to be exported in Montreal since the start of 2023. The CBSA intercepts 24 stolen cars on average each week.
Annie Beausejour is the director-general of CBSA for Quebec. She said, “The Canada Border Services Agency collaborates closely with insurance companies, police forces, and port authorities to counter theft and fraud, and ensure border security.”
Equite Association has previously stressed the importance of collaboration among government officials, insurance companies, and auto manufacturers in order to combat the crisis of car thefts that is sweeping Canada.
The list was released as part of an initiative to educate consumers on how they can protect themselves against the increasing number of auto thefts across the country.
The anti-insurance criminal organization estimates that auto theft claims will exceed $1.2 billion by 2022.
