The Lafayette Parish burn ban is still in effect. Two Scott residents have been cited by the police for setting fires to property that resulted in damage.
Scott Fire Chief Chad Sonnier says the current combination of windy and dry conditions make it difficult to contain any outdoor fire.
Sonnier reported that the Scott Fire Department had responded in less than 12 hours to two illegal fires of trash, which both spread, damaging a neighboring property.
The SFD responded to a call at 1:30 pm on Thursday for a fire in the 800 block Malapart Road. The firefighters arrived to find a fire in a nearby field that was spreading to materials being used by a neighbour to fix a barn.
Around 8:30 pm, SFD responded to a call for help in the 100 block Delhomme Avenue. They found that a fire had started next door and spread, destroying the house of the neighbor.
Both incidents saw firefighters quickly put out the fires, minimising the damages to the surrounding property.
Sonnier explained that if you break the burn ban, and the fire damages someone else’s property you will be financially responsible for the damage.
