Police and firefighters are still investigating the effects of an explosion that occurred in Oneida on 9 September, which was caused by a driver who drove recklessly. Steven Lowell, the chief of Oneida City Police Department stated that they have gathered sufficient evidence to make a full case for Madison County officials. The 17-year old suspect has been served with arrest warrants for 30 different charges.
Investigations were delayed because of issues relating to the age of the suspect and due to state-enforced laws on age raising and bail reform. Insurance inspectors are still assessing the amount of damage to the property. The recovery process is dependent on their findings. Owners will be able to obtain construction permits if the houses are salvageable. If they cannot, then they must apply for demolition permits.
Oneida Police has reopened West Elm Street for traffic. However, it’s not known when the affected five families can return home. It may be necessary to remove gas pipes, and the winter season will make the process more difficult.
Gas line explosions occur when a suspect crashes into a residence and cuts off the gas pipe. National Grid was notified and six houses were evacuated. A few hours after the explosion, one of the homes next to the SUV also exploded. No injuries have been reported.
George Stratton of Oneida, whose house was struck by the suspect’s vehicle, has expressed his frustration at National Grid for their response. He said they should have shut off the gas to stop the explosion. The explosion’s cause is unknown, and Stratton was left without a home as a consequence.
American Legion of Oneida will host a fundraiser to assist Stratton in recovering from this incident. To help, the community is collecting cash and gift cards. Stratton’s neighbor who was also affected by the blast expressed his gratitude to be alive, but his frustration at the curious individuals invading the privacy of the victim.
The investigation continues to find out the reasons behind the theft of the vehicle and what led up to it.
