Severe storms in June caused extensive damage to many parts of the Big Country. Hawley, in particular, was hard-hit.

Hawley Elementary suffered water damage due to the roof tiles and damaged ceiling.

Jacob Cox stated that the drywall in most classrooms was removed, and two inches of it replaced. It was much worse than expected, especially once the moisture metering started.

The principal opened the school the day after the first class, despite extensive damages.

Cox stated, “We’ll always have children here and will love, teach, and grow them into great people and citizens.” As a principal it is comforting to know that the school has been physically prepared. “I am certain that teachers were still anxious because we prepared at the eleventh hour.”

The principal is grateful for the patience of his restoration crews, who worked hard to replace and paint everything.

Cox stated that “the teachers needed to be patient, and this is difficult.” We are not usually very patient as educators. They’ve shown patience. But they’ve also been patient. They have rallied. They all pitched in. We’re prepared. “We got our last ceiling tile in today, and now we’re ready to welcome kids.”
