Monica Taylor, Delaware County Council chair, accompanied Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon and her staff, as well as Senator John Kane and the office of Senator Kearney, on a tour through Chadds Ford, which was heavily damaged by storms and strong winds in August. Tim Boyce led a tour of the area to give an update about the damages to roads, homes and businesses.
On August 7, the National Weather Service estimated that straight-line wind gusts in Delaware County were between 85 and 95 mph. This is equal to an EF-1 without rotation tornado.
The storm blew down powerlines and utility poles, which caused electrical fires and damaged homes and businesses. During or shortly after the storm, approximately 1300 service calls were dispatched by the County 911 Center. Between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm, more than 600 calls were received.
Chaddsford, Concord, Thornbury and Chester Heights declared disasters as a result.
The County has reported that 100 homes were damaged, and there are more reports to come. In Chadds Ford Concord and Thornbury, several homes have suffered damage, including one home in Chadds Ford that has been split in two and another that is off of its foundation. Homes in Haverford Township Middletown and Norwood also sustained damage. There were thankfully no serious injuries reported.
As a result, there are hundreds of fallen trees, homes that have been damaged and unpassable roads, according to Dr. Monica Taylor, Delaware County Council chair. The County has partnered with federal and state officials to help residents facing a lot of cleanup.
Department of Emergency Services of the County continues to collect damage data on downed tree and property damages from affected municipal residents and businesses. To submit for Public Assistance reimbursement to PEMA, the County’s Department of Emergency Services is attempting to collect cost recovery information for infrastructure damages, street cleanup, or cleaning up public land.
